Oil Region Alliance and the City of Franklin and the City of Oil City Venango receives 5 conservation grants for more than $300,000

........Frawley said the majority of grants are for Greenway projects that coincide with the organization’s mission to improve recreational accessibility (bike trails, waterways and river accessibility) and environmental protection.
Several of the current grants are for making improvements to the county’s network of bike and multi-use trails. Eventually, those trails are going to be part of a bigger trail network — the Erie-to-Pittsburgh Trail — a project that Frawley said the state is very invested in.

Plans for Millvale-to-Freeport trail move forward

A preliminary plan to develop a 26-mile recreational trail along the Allegheny River from Millvale to Freeport has won state approval, and trail organizers are moving forward.

"The approval makes sure that every piece of the plan is doable and that it fits into a larger network of statewide trails and greenways," said Tom Baxter, executive director of nonprofit Friends of the Riverfront, which is leading the trail development.

It also would serve as another link in the proposed Erie-to-Pittsburgh trail.

Armstrong Rails to Trails hopes to close the gap

By Roseanne Linko
LEADER TIMES

Monday, July 4, 2011

Despite the wet spring and a few weeks of heat, Armstrong Rails to Trails (ARTA) volunteers continued to self-build trail and to maintain 18 miles of finished trail.  Donations to the organization's Chip N Trail Fund have been used to purchase crushed limestone which is being spread over newly graded sections.

Trail building efforts this year are focused between Grays Eddy and Hook Station. A grant was received from the Volunteer Fund of the Pittsburgh Foundation, which will be used to purchase additional limestone, letting ARTA add another mile of trail in this area.

For future work, a grant application was submitted by the Allegheny Valley Land Trust (owners of the trail corridor), requesting money to purchase materials to build a five-mile section between Lock & Dam 9 and Phillipston.  A second grant was submitted for a feasibility study for a possible campground in the Phillipston area and to evaluate the Brady Tunnel for renovation as a future connection to the Allegheny River Trail.

These projects will reduce the unfinished section of the trail to six miles.  Once the gap is closed, bicyclists, walkers and cross country skiers will be able to use 30 miles of continuous trail.

ARTA is also working with neighboring trail systems in an effort to link trails together from Lake Erie to Pittsburgh. Although not complete and rough in sections, the Armstrong trail is "Ready to Ride."  Membership is growing and more people are using the trail for fitness and leisure activities, according to the ARTA.

Other projects that have been completed or are in the works this year include improvements to the bridge across Mahoning Creek, a stream stabilization project at mile 47.75 outside of Kittanning and surfacing of the Cowanshannock Connector Trail.

A sewage plant project in East Brady will provide trailhead parking and restrooms along with a shared access road to the new plant and current trail starting point.  This project is scheduled to start this fall.

Visit the website at www.armstrongtrail.org to learn more about the trail, activities scheduled and volunteer opportunities. The new trail map and guide is available at the Armstrong County Tourism Bureau and in many local businesses in towns along the trail.  For information contact the trail office at 724-543-1783.

Friends of the Riverfront

The proposed 16-mile trail along the Allegheny River from Millvale to Freeport is one step closer to fruition.

When complete, plans call for the recreation trail to traverse along the Allegheny River passing through 18 communities including: Pittsburgh, Millvale, Shaler, Etna, Sharpsburg, Aspinwall, Fox Chapel, O'Hara, Blawnox, Harmar, Cheswick, Springdale, Springdale Township, Frazer, Tarentum, Brackenridge, Harrison and Freeport.

The Pittsburgh to Freeport trail would become a part of the Three Rivers Heritage Trail and the Erie to Pittsburgh Trail Alignment.

Erie to Pittsburgh Trail Alliance

The emerging Erie-to-Pittsburgh Trail network is like a 260-mile puzzle with more than half the pieces in place.  Named for its two Pennsylvania anchor cities, the tagline is “Connecting the Lake to the Point.”

Relocation of a section of the Three Rivers Heritage Trail near the 31st Street Bridge, including construction of a trail bridge along the edge of the Allegheny River, is expected to be completed sometime in August, said Thomas E. Baxter IV, executive director of Friends of the Riverfront, the project sponsor.     It's done!

Route 28 Trail Construction:  Tom Baxter indicated at a recent EPTA meeting that a June ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held for this vital project, for which construction is slated to finish in mid-May; the engineering, permitting, etc. cost approximately $1 million and the construction cost approximately $3 million.  He noted that being part of a Mega Greenway such as Erie-to-Pittsburgh helps with funding.

Another vital section of the system will now be linked.

Rails to Trails Conservancy

Ms. Pat Tomes indicated the public informational meeting concerning the Erie-to-Pittsburgh Trail held November 16 at the Fire Hall in Freeport, PA had 60 attendees and resulted in media coverage and some additional new volunteers.  During June, RTC will conduct a public informational meeting in Erie, on a date to be determined, perhaps near June 5 which is National Trail Day.

Northwest PA Trails Association  &  Clear Lake Authority
